Ryoko Tamura
Illustrator: class of 2025
Ryoko Tamura is a Japanese illustrator based in Edinburgh. She graduated with a degree in illustration from Edinburgh College of Art in 2007. Drawing on her Japanese heritage and the diverse cultures she has encountered through travel, she creates work that captures a plaful blend of East and West. Ryoko finds inspiration in everyday life, humour, and daydreaming – alongside her beloved black cat.
Ryoko was mentored by David Melling
“The mentoring programme with David was the best experience I could have asked for as a learning illustrator. He guided me through how he develops his own work step by step, which was incredibly inspiring and insightful. We spent a lot of time exploring character development through movement sequences, which helped me connect with my own characters on a much deeper level. David also encouraged me to experiment with different materials and textures that I wouldn’t normally use, which was both exciting and challenging. This experimentation opened up new ways of thinking about my creative process and how I bring my ideas to life. He also provided valuable insight into the publishing world, helping me understand the industry more clearly. Throughout the programme, I’m most grateful for David’s honest feedback, encouragement, thoughtful advice, and wonderful sense of humour. Every session was filled with learning, laughter, and inspiration.”
